Signature Links in DoFollow Blogs
InlineSEO’s DoFollow Diver powered by Google Search is currently searching 700+ dofollow blogs. Some of these include top commenter lists and CommentLuv plugins.
This is an excellent tool to find topic related entries in blogs that pass link juice to your site. To find DoFollow blogs you could use the DoFollow directory (very poor) and the various lists of DoFollow blogs scattered all over the blogosphere.
Comment signature links don’t bear a high SEO weight, but they do provide for some “link juice”, which could be valuable if the blog hosting your comments belongs to a niche related to your site. The “link juice” gets even stronger if you use keywords in the signature link.
This is not a practice I advise though: many bloggers will automatically mark your comment as spam if you don’t use your name. Some commentators use a way around this: they use both name and keywords. For example, instead of signing “SEO expert” they sign “John, SEO expert” or “Bob, Cheap Cars.”
While “John, SEO expert” works, “Bob, Cheap Cars” does not. It’s easy to figure it out: Bob is obviously not a cheap car. He is probably a cars dealer. So this is what he should use in his signature link: Bob, Cars Dealer.
Using the job title after the name is less obtrusive than using keywords alone, yet this doesn’t make the practice any better than comment spamming.
If you are serious about creating an online reputation while getting some link love from the blogs where you comment, make sure you don’t post a comment just for the link juice. Use just your name (so no keywords in the signature link) and engage yourself in a meaningful conversation. Your win will be even greater: people will click on your name to learn more about the commenter who wrote such insightful lines.

Bear in mind that it is very easy to get blacklisted by Akismet if you don’t show due respect to commenting on other peoples blogs
Once you are blacklisted it can be a real pain as your comments are then automatically thrown into the spam ban and are dependent on the owner manually salvaging your comment.
Reading other peoples blogs and then offering comment is a fun way of building links though

This is a very valid point, Andy, thank you for adding to the conversation. I am very surprised Mike didn’t enclose the warning – I am sure he is very familiar with the problems.

I agree with you, Andy. Commenting on other blogs is one way of building links.
As for me, I always use my name.

Question is, what will happen to all those practices should Google change the way pages are ranked?

I didn’t see the severity of getting getting banned by Akismet until you pointed it out. Also I never went in to spam ban folder to save peoples comments from my blog, I guess now i have to start going in and checking the spamed messages!
Thanks for the heads up and the tips!

Andy, I myself agree with you too as well. As for my own blog, as long as the simple rules of leaving comments are followed such as using a name, whatever website you use, whether personal or not, is ok, so long as the comment actually brings some sort of values to the articles it is left on… otherwise, it does not belong there.

so many people these days are using long keywords as their comment name. Most of the directories I have ran into are junk.
Good luck with your blogging.

I agree about posting strong anchor text instead of your real name. I typically follow the example set by previous comments. For example here I used my full name because everyone has. I rather benefit from the backlink with my name than just being sent to the spammer pile.

Thanks for the tips. I usually use the name of my blog but this post is giving me enough reason to use my name instead. Other blog owners don’t mind though and usually, they comment back to my site.

SEO is not an exact science, but there are few good formulas that add up to something in the right zone. Link building is key.
