The Importance of Your Own Domain Name and Hosting
The importance of having your own domain name and hosting for your website or blog cannot be stressed enough. Many people start with a free website or blog to experiment. They want to see if they’ll like it. That’s fair enough. But if you go down this track, be prepared to ditch your free site sooner rather than later.
The ideal situation is to sign up for your own domain name and web hosting right from the outset. It’s not a huge investment, but you’ll save yourself a lot of heartache and regrets in the long term. The web is littered with stories of people who started a free site which took off unexpectedly.
Once it’s doing well, they are reluctant to let go of it. They don’t want to lose all those valuable incoming links pointing directly to their site. So they hang in with the free site a bit longer, until they feel they are locked in, and it’s too late to change.
While some website and blog owners have no plans to sell their site when they begin, there may come a time when they reconsider this. While you can sell the content you’ve written for a blogspot or wordpress.org blog, for example, you do not own the blog platform, so your site is not as valuable for resale.
Many free websites are able to be offered free because they have ad banners. If you are a business owner, it does not show a professional face if you have a web address from a free site with ads you have no control over. Realizing the importance of your own domain name and hosting is planning for the future.
